Bomb Case Raises Issue of Islam in Jails

The possibility that the alleged New York bomb plotters converted to Islam in prison and adopted radical views could provide evidence of how the criminal-justice system can be fertile ground for terrorist recruitment.
Authorities said they believed all four men charged in the attack were Muslim and that some may have converted in prison. It isn't clear whether these conversions were linked to the radical views officials say they espoused while plotting to bomb two New York City synagogues and shoot down U.S. military planes.
The men were arrested Wednesday in a months-long undercover operation that ended with them allegedly placing what they thought were real explosives in front of the synagogues. The plot was monitored by federal authorities who provided the suspects with fake explosives. The men remain in custody and face federal conspiracy charges.

Not all Brits are whiny liberals, Michael Savage
What's the definition of a racist? A conservative winning an argument. What's the definition of someone of "such extreme views and expressing them in such a way that it is actually likely to cause inter-community tension or even violence"? Ditto.
Jacqui Smith has banned American radio host Michael Savage from Britain, further evidence that the ideology of easily-offended liberalism, often known by that overused expression Political Correctness, is a danger to freedom.
Our joke of a Home Secretary called Savage "someone who has fallen into the category of fomenting hatred, of such extreme views and expressing them in such a way that it is actually likely to cause inter-community tension or even violence if that person were allowed into the country."
He's been placed on a list along with almost a dozen Islamist nutjobs, including Yunis Al-Astal, the leader of the Islamist terrorist group Hamas, which has murdered hundreds of Palestinians and Israelis. There are also some old school white extremists linked to violent organisations, such as former Ku Klux Klan grand wizard Stephen Donald and a couple of Russian skinhead leaders. Savage, a slightly more forthright version of Richard Littlejohn or Jon Gaunt, sits oddly at ease with this crowd.

Toddler who died of swine flu visited Houston mall

McALLEN, Texas — A Mexico City toddler who became the first swine-flu death on U.S. soil spent a day shopping at a huge indoor mall in Houston one day before he began to show symptoms.
Cameron County Judge Carlos Cascos, who spoke with an aunt of the boy in Brownsville who made the Houston trip, said they spent three nights in Houston just before he fell ill and was hospitalized in Brownsville.
The hospital, city and health officials on Wednesday said the 23-month old boy had traveled from Mexico City to Brownsville, where he became sick. When the hospital in Brownsville, a city of 140,000, could no longer care for him, he was medically transported to Texas Children's Hospital. They said he had had no outside contact in Houston. The family has shown no symptoms.
Calls seeking comment from Texas Children's Hospital were not immediately returned.
Dr. Susan Fisher-Hoch, a professor of epidemiology at The University of Texas School of Public Health in Brownsville, said that those infected can secrete the virus through their saliva 24 hours before they display symptoms.
The toddler then could have been infectious while he was in Brownsville the first time and was probably infectious while in Houston, said Fisher-Hoch, who was former deputy branch chief at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control's Special Pathogens Laboratory. Still, the toddler would not have likely transmitted the virus to many people at the mall, she said.
Kathy Barton, spokeswoman for the Houston Health and Human Services Department, said the city's epidemiologist would try to re-interview the family, but that the family didn't mention the first trip to Houston. Barton said the a large mall would also not be very conducive to transmitting the virus by a toddler who was likely in a stroller, she said.

Swine death toll and threat level rises

MARK COLVIN: More than 150 people are now known to have died in the Mexican swine flu outbreak. The World Health Organization has reacted to the threat posed by the disease by lifting the level of the influenza pandemic alert from three to four.
The disease is spreading with confirmed cases in four countries and suspected cases in 11.
David Mark reports.
DAVID MARK: The swine flu outbreak is not a pandemic - yet. The World Health Organization has lifted its pandemic threat alert level from three to four. It's a six-step scale with six meaning a global pandemic so stage four means a pandemic is likely but not inevitable.
Professor Dominic Dwyer is a medical virologist at Westmead Hospital and a member of the national influenza advisory group.
DOMINIC DWYER: I think it is significant. It is recognition that there is definite transmission from person to person in Mexico and that there has been transmission of cases to other parts of the world. So I think the WHO are reflecting the real activity.
DAVID MARK: The swine flu death toll is at more than 150 in Mexico and the disease is also spreading in other countries. In the United States 44 people have the disease. There are six in Canada and now there are confirmed cases outside the Americas, in Spain and Scotland.
No cases have been confirmed in Australia although health authorities are still monitoring 43 people who may have the disease.
The Prime Minister Kevin Rudd.
KEVIN RUDD: This is a serious international concern for public health and therefore we share that concern with other governments around the world, which is why the Australian Health Protection Committee has been actively monitoring developments around the world and providing the Australian Government with advice as to the necessary sequence of actions to take here.
DAVID MARK: Australia has started throwing up the barriers. From last night pilots flying in from the Americas have had to report on the health of their passengers. Even so the Greens leader Senator Bob Brown says the Government should be doing more.
BOB BROWN: We need the information coming out from Government. It's coming out slowly, but I think they ought to have been faster with the, for example, checks on planes. They could have been a couple of days faster with that. And I think they should be a little faster in informing the public about what measures to be taken.
DAVID MARK: And there are some who believe trying to stop the swine flu from coming to Australia will be virtually impossible.

"President Obama understands that abortion is a divisive issue, and respects those who disagree with him. However, he has been a consistent champion of reproductive choice and will make preserving women's rights under Roe v. Wade a priority in his Administration. He opposes any constitutional amendment to overturn the Supreme Court's decision in that case.
"President Obama was an original co-sponsor of legislation to expand access to contraception, health information, and preventive services to help reduce unintended pregnancies. Introduced in January 2007, the Prevention First Act will increase funding for family planning and comprehensive sex education that teaches both abstinence and safe sex methods. The Act will also end insurance discrimination against contraception, improve awareness about emergency contraception, and provide compassionate assistance to rape victims."

Terror attack in Jerusalem, 17 wounded
At least 17 reported wounded as terrorist runs private car into pedestrian crowd at busy intersection in central Jerusalem. Paramedics say two in serious condition. Terrorist reportedly shot dead by IDF officer

A terrorist driving a black BMW ran his car into a crowd of pedestrians at a busy intersection in central Jerusalem near the Old City on Monday evening.
At least 17 people were confirmed wounded at Zahal Square, most in light-to-moderate condition. Magen David Adom paramedics evacuated those wounded to the Hadassah Ein Karem and Shaare Zedek hospitals for treatment.
Most of those wounded are reportedly soldiers belonging to the Artillery Corps who were on a 'Selichot Tour' in Jerusalem. Selichot are Jewish penitential prayers said during the High Holidays.
The terrorist, a Palestinian from east Jerusalem, was shot dead by an IDF officer holding the rank of lieutenant who was with the soldiers.
A female civilian sustained moderate-to-serious wounds.
Rescue services rushed to the scene, and police have blocked traffic in the area. Sappers examined the terrorist's body, fearing he may have been wearing a bomb belt.
The terrorist reportedly began his rampage on Shivtei Yisrael Street. Security authorities say they have been able to ascertain the identity of the terrorist, it has not yet been released for publication.
"The terrorist was in a private car, he rammed straight into a group of people touring the area," said first
responded Haim Weingreten, a ZAKA volunteer.
Police say had no alerts
Jerusalem District Commander Aharon Franco said that police officials did not have a specific warning regarding an intention to carry out an attack in Jerusalem.
"This attack could have taken place anywhere," he said. "The police are deployed in force in order to prevent such incidents.
Earlier this summer, Jerusalem was the scene of two similar attacks. In the first attack, three people were murdered after an east Jerusalem terrorist went on a rampage with his bulldozer, targeting passersby in central Jerusalem. More than 30 people sustained wounds in the attack.
Three weeks later, a terrorist who went on a similar rampage was shot to death early into his attack. As a result, he was unable to murder anyone, but 18 people were wounded in the attack. The terrorist who perpetrated the second rampage was also from east Jerusalem.
